Crochet: what it costs and who it fits

Crochet fits people who want quiet handwork with fast visible results and cheap mistakes. One hook, one live loop, and anything you get wrong pulls out to exactly where you stopped. It is the most forgiving yarn craft to learn. The catch is that the fabric is thicker and less stretchy than knitting, so garments are harder to get right than blankets and toys.

What it actually costs

The cost table on this page shows $15 to $50 to start, and the low end is completely real.

The cheap entry path is one hook and one skein. A Clover Amour hook in H (5.0mm) is $10.75, and Lion Brand Wool-Ease is $5.99 for 197 yards of worsted acrylic and wool blend. Under $20, and that combination will carry you through a month of practice squares and a first small project. Choose a light colour: dark yarn hides your stitches and makes learning harder than it needs to be.

The mid-path is a second hook and better yarn. A bulky N/P (10.0mm) Amour hook is $12.25, and bulky yarn on a big hook builds a blanket fast, which matters enormously in the first month when you need to see progress.

The purchase to delay is the set. The full 10-size Clover Amour Crochet Hook Set is $93.95. It is excellent and you will eventually want it, but buying ten hooks before you know whether you like the craft is the classic way to end up with $93.95 of shelf decoration. Buy it after three finished projects.

Ongoing cost is yarn only, and the $10 to $50 monthly range in the table is entirely a taste question. At $5.99 a skein a blanket is four to six skeins, so roughly $24 to $36. Hand-dyed wool costs several times that per skein whenever you decide to let it.

Time to your first win

Two days. A practice square looks like a square by your second sitting, and a small amigurumi animal takes about a week of evenings and reads clearly as the animal it is meant to be.

That speed is the reason to pick crochet over knitting as a first yarn craft. You get a finished object early, which builds the habit before the tedium arrives.

The honest part is tension. Your first pieces will be tighter than the pattern expects, which means your amigurumi comes out small and your blanket comes out stiff. It takes about a month to loosen up, and there is no shortcut. The other honest part is pattern language: written crochet patterns are dense abbreviations and repeat brackets, and they are genuinely hard to read for the first few weeks. Video walkthroughs of your specific pattern are the standard fix.

• You want a hobby with almost no space requirement and no noise at all.

Skip it if

• You want fitted garments as your main output. Knitting handles those better.
• Repetitive hand motion aggravates your wrists. This is hours of the same movement.
• You want a hobby that moves you, gets you outside, or gets you around people.
• You need each session to be different. Rows 40 to 400 of a blanket are identical.
• You dislike reading dense written instructions, and video-only learning frustrates you.

Your first month

1. Buy one 5.0mm hook at $10.75 and one skein of light-coloured worsted yarn at $5.99. Do not buy a set.
2. Learn the chain and single crochet only. Make squares until the edges stop growing or shrinking, usually four or five sittings.
3. Make one small amigurumi animal as project one. It finishes in a week and teaches working in the round.
4. Make a bulky-yarn blanket as project two. Big stitches, fast visible progress, and it carries you through the tedium phase.
5. Only after three finished pieces should you buy the hook set or upgrade to expensive yarn.
